MPC to Maschine: sounds, samples, and keygroups

13

This is just part of a short series I’m doing trying to answer some of the common questions I get for folks used to using an MPC and seeing how terms and functions relate to Maschine.

This one just quickly covers what a “sound” is in Maschine and how it relates to samples and keygroups.

Basically a sound in Maschine is a container that holds audio…

it can be a single sound, multiple sounds, or a multi-sampled instrument.

  1. I’ve been just doing drums and chops in Maschine lately, thanks for reminding me of the other features lol. I know reviews are your main thing, but your walkthroughs are always great, keep em coming. Thanks Joe!

    • @London Black, my samples folder, the factory folder says 18,113 files are in there, that’s all the factory samples. The drum folder says 6,157 files…I didn’t count the folders, just the wave files. So that’s how many drums in there lol.

  2. Once again you have educated the massess. Thanks SJ for taking the time out to explain that little bit of info. That alone gives the Maschine an even better look.

  3. Good tutorial because you can’t even do mapping to that level with a MPC. I’m still amazed that Akai hasn’t come up with an MPC that can interface with a computer via software to give you total control yet.
The smart money would be to have a product that can interface with software as well as works the same as a standalone the way that Beat Thang is trying to do with its hardware whenever (maybe I should say “if”) that product actually materializes.

    • @Madbull1971, yeah man, definitely a hybrid approach is something someone should do, but I’m happy wit Maschine lol, if BT comes out, it could provide that “away from the computer” feel I want, we’ll see. If i ever get a hardware again, it needs to totally integrate with the computer.

  4. Thanks for the vid, I definitely appreciate how you put things into layman’s terms. For there’s times when I don’t mind being technical but there’s others, when you’re being creative, it can be a henderance. This was one of Maschine’s features that wowed me when I hooked up my midi keyboard, it just really expands things. Now if NI implements layering and manipulation similar to Kontackt/Battery…wheeew man! Good times!
BeatThang kind of took a back burner since, jeez I thought the hardware would’ve been out by now.
All I need is my 15″ laptop & Maschine (a la Steve Martin’s movie the Jerk) funny movie if you’ve ever seen it you’d get the joke.

    • @jamari, word man, thanks for checkin it out, yes Maschine is dope lol, I love it. I’m still looking forward to seing beat thang hardware, just for a different “away from computer” experience, but we’ll see…I know roland should be dropping a new mv soon as well, but it won’t be 1k or less lol.
