Goldbaby Fatso Synths vol 1 review

15

Today we’re checking out some synths sounds from a creator known for his fat drums….

Sound crazy? It’s not!

Goldbaby has been known for his analog and creative processing of drum sounds to provide a unique quality, so unique that many companies such as Native Instruments use his services to provide content for their products.

Recently he’s started to produce more synths and instruments in his signature style of processing and recording, today I’m checking out Fatso Synths vol 1.

So what is Fatso Synths?

It’s basically a collection of 5 vintage synths, processed Goldbaby style, more specific to this collection, is that it was processed with a Fatso fx unit.

The Fatso is known to add a thickness/tape saturated feel to anything it touches.

Goldbaby has a tweaked out UBK Fatso, which has some custom compressor tweaks done by Greg at Kush Audio.

There is also some additional processing done with Mutronics Mutator as well as some chorus fx added on some sounds for more variety.

The synths that were used to create the library are the Ensoniq ESQ 1, Korg Delta, Moog MG-1, Yamaha DX100, and the Roland JX3P.

Quick Specs

  • Content: 1365 24 bit wav samples, 144 kontakt patches, 143 exs patches, 43 multi samples
  • Format: Kontakt, EXS24, 24 bit Wav
  • Price: $49.99

How does it sound?

Thick! Very very thick. ย I love how Goldbaby processes and programs his sounds, has a very good character.

The Fatso definitely adds something to the samples, but I also like the fact that in addition to the straight samples with Fatso love (raw sounds category) he also did some extra tweaking in kontakt/exs to take advantage of each sampler’s features.

I use Kontakt, so I enjoyed some of the scripting involved, the mod wheel assignments, and other enhancements done.

The sound itself is just pure fat, I really feel there is a difference between using samples of a synth and using vsts. Both sound good, and of course vsts can usually be more flexible than samples, but there is just a quality/character that comes with sampling exactly what’s coming out of these classic synths that just stands out in my eyes.

Not that one method is better or worse, I use both, but I always notice a difference in classic samples, WHEN THEY ARE DONE RIGHT!

The bass in here really has that thick, low, warm rumble that many of us absolutely LOVE.

High quality recordings, looping is done well so that you can play that funky leads/pads or whatever…at least they sounded seamlessly looped to me!

So what’s the bottom line?

This is a good product, and I’m always impressed by Goldbaby’s price to quality ratio. ย A lot of companies claim to offer something unique, but Goldaby always provides character in the samples he creates, not just a 1 to 1 copy of the original.

His attention to detail and processing is what separates his libraries from the rest.

I like the Kontakt scripting that’s going on here, definitely makes for some expressive sounds.

The inclusion of raw waves and single cycle oscillators is a great addition allowing you to sculpt and mold your own sounds based on the fatso/goldbaby foundation.

I give this library a 4 out of 5 subs, great quality, useful, and a lot of character.

Go on over and check it out, see for yourself and have a look at some of the other goodies Goldbaby Fatso Synths

  1. I don’t have a SP1200, or a MPC60 or any outboard gear or synths for that matter, but GoldBaby always comes to my rescue:)
Quality over quantity is most important when I buy sounds, and obviously GoldBaby feels the same. I’m looking forward to checking this out as it’s instrument patches rather than the WAV sets he usually produces.

BTW – You should have kept going @the 2:40 mark, that was Fred and The JB’s Blow Your Head ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for another solid review SaintJoe.
