Waves Factory Tea Towel Drum review

31

Yo what’s good fam!

Today I’m checking out some drums from Waves Factory

This one is called Tea Towel Drum

Let’s see what’s good!

So what is Tea Towel Drum?

It’s a drum kit for Kontakt based off of the “tea towel” technique from the 60s and 70s which the Beattles and other artists used to give the drums and damper sound.

They would place towels over the snares and toms, which gives it that softer more mellow sound that many associate with that time period.

This is a library that was recorded in the exact same way, with the towels, to give that feel and sound.

It’s a straight forward instrument that loads up in Kontakt, has some parameters you can tweak for each of the 8 mics, and thats about it.

Quick Specs

  • content: 8.27GB
  • format: Kontakt 3.5 or higher
  • price: $9.95

How does it sound?

It sounds really good, this drum kit definitely has a mellow, organic sound to it.

More of a soft warm feel as opposed to loud and bright, though you can tweak it with the custom mic controls it still retains that mellow tone.

There really isn’t much to say here, it’s pretty much a well recorded, organic sounding drum kit.

They even allowed for mic bleed to be recorded so if you hit the bass drum, you get sound from all 8 mics, which gives it more of a live sound.

The samples are great, no noise or hiss or other undesirable artifacts.

So what’s the bottom line?

Bottom line is this, sure there are more detailed dedicated drum libraries with more bells and whistles but there’s nothing at this price that sounds this good.

You can’t find a folder full of well recorded acoustic drums for this price, let alone a fully designed Kontakt instrument.

The update even includes a  multi output option so you can mix each sound separately.

The price to quality ratio is pretty crazy here, and if you look on their site, they price all of their products like this, none of which appear to lack in quality.

I give this instrument 3.5 out of 5 subs, it’s a great, straight forward, awesome sounding drum kit.

Not a lot of bells and whistles, not a lot of features, but if all you’re looking for is a great acoustic kit you can pull out and play, then definitely check this out.

I also  love the mellow/organic tone that the tea towels bring to it, definitely provides a contrast to many of the big and bright libraries around.

Go on over and check them out man, seriously: http://samples.wavesfactory.com/?p=494

  1. I bought a guitar sampled from these guys, and it was nice also. Most of their libraries are around $10. Maybe not the greatest, but good quality stuff for a really good price.

  2. $10…what! Talk about budget-beat making, you can’t get much better than this. There are times when deeper products can distract your creative process due to their vast controls/parameters, as the K.I.S theory goes, “keep it simple”. (i.e. BFD Eco). Well worth the investment of time and coin in my book.

  3. Just got it. Cool for $10 I like that Beatles kinda sound!. Only thing is I can’t get it to add to the library list on the left in Kontakt 4. It’s in my files of course but won’t let me add it library list on the left. Know what I mean? Any ideas?

  4. You can either drag them over to the Rack window like normal to play them. To add them to Quick Load open the Quick Load window. There is a icon for it at the top or you can just right in the Rack view to bring it up. Then just drag the .nki files over to that. You can create category folders, sub folders, etc by right clicking.

  5. Yup that I get, what I mean is to add the Teatowel kit to the Library list on the left just like if you have Komplete and all the instruments are there on the left to pick from.

  6. @thomasgreco,
The creator of Tea Towel Drums sample library didn’t compile those samples with the .nkc files to allow you to add it as a Library in Kontakt. Probably because they would have to pay a licensing fee to Native Instruments so the way you have to bring it up is how I explained above.
