Native Instruments Maschine sequencing vst instruments in standalone mode

Sequencing vsts in Maschine…without loading it as a plugin in a DAW

I just found out a dope way to use Maschine to sequence vsts without having to load it as a plugin.

I don’t like maschine as a plugin, because it has to become slave to the host transport.

Using transport and tap tempo buttons is a huge part of my workflow. I stop and start a lot.

So I have it setup exactly like I would an mpc. ย I use Reaper to act as a rack to hold my vsts, I setup a template so that each channel receives midi from one of 16 channels in Maschine.

I just “looped” a single midi cable from the Midi Out of Maschine to the Midi In of Maschine.

I have Maschine set to use my usb interface, and Reaper uses my internal soundcard. Both using ASIO drivers, latency isn’t an issue.

I have audio cables from both outputs going into my mixer.

I also have it set to record the output as audio for when I want to track out the songs.

All I do is set a sound in Maschine to send midi and I can pull up my vsts with ease.

It’s a very dope setup, I leave reaper on my laptop screen and Maschine is on my main screen, it’s almost like opening vsts in maschine.

This video just shows how I do it, I love it. Save two files, but that’s very quick and all my stuff is recalled.

Let me know what you think.

If you want the template for Maschine VST Rack here it is: Maschine VST Rack Template

    Thats Nice! Complicated!…. But Nice!…..

I’ve just got my Maschine yesterday and have a lot of learning to do with this BEAST, I’m so looking forward to it.

    Peace

    • Thanks! It’s actually less comlpicated than it looks hahaha, but I understand. It’s definitely a nice way of working!

Make sure you checkout my other Maschine vids or ask questions if you got em!

  3. Whatup Saintjoe? That is some clever thinking right there. I know you’re fiendin’ for that upcoming mpc import in Maschine. Every time I tell myself I don’t want or need Maschine, you pop up showin’ and provin’ otherwise (haha). I honestly think Maschine’s price is a little steep, at $399 I would have copped one a year ago.
I know it’s a dope front end and a quality controller but $600 still seems high.

Peace and blessings to you and your family this holiday, and be safe and thanks to your uncle for his service.

    • hahaha, yeah I feel ya man!

I think about it like this…. I come from hardware, those joints are rarely ever under 1k! My MPC 4000 was close to 3k new! I got it for 1500 but still lol.

fantoms, motifs, all those racks, etc…. very high.

Maschine is definitely a step up from the normal pricing, but there’s other software that can cost as much….especially some sound libraries.

I know it’s steep though…but it’s still cheaper than buying an mpc or mv8800 or whatever lol

  5. Yo Joe,

I started working with my Maschine today (finally). The day that Mashine was delivered to me my Hard Drive crapped out on me so I’ve been down for 2 days without being about to do nothing with Maschine. That’ll teach me not to pay for faster shipping next time. Being that I couldn’t use Maschine I read the manual.

This is my first best using Machine only (no DAW, no extra sounds or anything…just Maschine).

I got to get use to how this thing is setup.

But here is the first beat I’ve done with Maschine (Its really short and nothing much to it but give me time and I’ll get this thing down).

  6. Yo, I thought I was the only one that loves that MPC set up. All I need is the Maschine to control my hardware synths and my vst’s. Dope. How would you set up the hardware synths like a proteus 2000? Let me know. ONE. How would you route the audio cables to your interface?

    Reply
    • well it would be similar, just send midi out to your proteus either through your audio interface or with a physical midi cable. As far as routing audio, that depends on your interface, out from the proteus into your interface.

  7. The reason why I am looking to leave the MPC2000xl world because when it comes time save it is such a hassle with saving the midi and hoping it loads back up with the correct sounds. Using your current setup, how would you save a track regarding if you have to save with midi program changes or not. How easy is it to save and how will you save a sessions. Thanks for any feedback. ONE.

    • Well in this setup I’d just save the project in Maschine and save the project in Reaper and everything would come up right.

I don’t have anymore hardware to try and sequence with, but I know there is no function to send program changes or msb/lsb data from within Maschine to external gear…which puts you pretty much back in the same situation.

I just got tired of load times on the mpc, low memory, and having to track my beats out when I’m done, that’s a long process lol.

Hopefully they continue in the rate they are going and add more features for folks sequencing hardware, a simple msb/lsb slot on midi out would be fantastic I think.

      • Man we are on the same page! I have the same frustrations with my mpc 2000xl load times and saving the sessions with my hardware synths. So, you said Maschine do not msb/lsb data? So what might be away around that scenario as far as saving my hardware sounds. Would I have to covert my midi to audio in Maschine and save it that way? To be honest I really want to let my hardware modules go I am just so use to that work flow. But it looks like you came from that same era and moved on. You will be my inspiration. Any advise?

        • at this point the only thing hardware modules offer over software is the speed with which you can browse through the sounds as opposed to “loading” sounds in software. Also, being able to reach out and touch the modules.

I’ve had tons of modules, the last one I sold was a Novation Supernova, I loved it, had tons of knobs, but saving multis on it just got old to me lol.

Honestly, when/if they move to allow Maschine to host vsts inside itself, it will be the only thing I need for production, many of us are pushing for that.

I just don’t see a way around the msb/lsb thing and I would hope in the future they would include it for those that still like hardware modules, because some of them are still great products.

I guess you could sample your modules into Maschine as you’re making the tracks, but I’m just not sure how to save a sequence and recall all of your module settings without msb/lsb data…I was in heaven when I discovered that years ago lol.

  8. Whats up man. So I got the template loaded, and on each channel it says “MIDI:Not Connected” So….would you mind telling me EXACTLY how your mid ins and outs are setup in your maschine software, as well as which ins and outs are enabled/disabled in Reaper? I’d really appreciate it. Btw, my soundcard is a Digidesign Mbox 2…if that helps….

    • In maschine i have loopbe selected as the midi out, in reaper i have loopbe connected as the midi input

you need to download loopbe virtual midi cable it’s free

I did the same thing with a physical midi cable connected to the in and out of maschine in a loop, but the virtual works better
