A Basic guide to EQ frequencies from Future Music

First let me qualify this by saying, I’m NOT an engineer, I have friends that are, and I ask them tons of questions when I have them.

That said, I get a lot of folks asking me about EQ/Mixing, and I have plans to have my buddies share some tips on this site when their schedules permit.

But my general advice is always “use your ears”. With all the tools we have now, it’s easy to try and dial in the perfect mix, but the bottom line is you gotta do what sounds good, of course it always helps to have a general baseline so to speak.

I’ve seen a few different EQ charts around, some easier to read than others, but this one is nice for a quick general idea of sounds and frequencies (not saying it’s the best chart)

So for a general push in the right direction or to have a general idea of where different sounds should sit or what frequencies will boost/cut them in a mix, checkout this chart from Future Music. I thought it was pretty cool and easy to use. Of course this isn’t going to give you a crash master course in how to eq like the pros, but it’s a nice foundation I think.

  1. A nice chart and good to learn from. One tip that may help others, mute the sound on 3nd track, listen to what you have created, once or twice, unmute 3rd track and if, only if, it still sounds good, make 3rd track, repeat the mute again. once you get the hang of this, you wont have to mute till the 4th track and so on. Keep Smiling. Jock
