Tone 2 Saurus analog modeled synth plugin review

15

Hey what’s good fam, back with another one for ya!

This one comes from Tone 2, they make some of my favorite synths like Firebird and ElextraX

Now they’ve stepped into the analog modelling category with a new synth plugin

let’s check it out!

So what is Saurus?

It’s a new synthesizer plugin based on Tone 2’s “True Analog Modelling Technology

Basically what this means is that they modelled not only the sound of various analog synthesizers, but the circuits, components, routing, and even the imperfections.

They did this all with a very light cpu hit…which I still can’t quite understand how they did so

You can use it as a mono or poly synth, so you get the best of the analog synth world in a digital format.

But…does it sound good?

Quick Specs

  • format: PC/Mac 32 and 64 bit VST and AU
  • price: $119

So how does it sound?

Man this thing is a BEAST! Seriously, it doesn’t sound like one specific analog synth, it really has it’s own sound, but that sound is definitely analog!

It’s not just one type of analog either, it can do the raw/thick leads and bass but also can do the super lush pads and thick brass.

The keys and synths are equally impressive and there’s some crazy fx in there as well.

The oscillators themselves sound great and when you throw in the sub oscillators things really get nasty!

Overall it has a great analog sound, but not a “copy” of any one analog synth or filter in my opinion.

So what’s the bottom line?

If you want to throw some analog loving into your productions, please do yourself a favor and at least try the demo of Saurus.

Seriously, as I sat there going back and forth between it and my own analog synth (DSI Mopho) I couldn’t help but smile, as they really capture that character of analog synths.

Will it replace your desire for the real thing? Well that depends on you, for me real analog synths bring something special to the table with their knobs, cases, and hands on desireability.

However, purely from a sound standpoint you can no longer say “you can’t get that sound in software”

Sure there will be purists that will never admit that any software sounds like analog synths, me…I don’t care, I love sounds no matter if they are analog, digital, va, software, or hardware.

For me Saurus is another great tool in the collection, and the price keeps it very affordable, great stuff!

I give this synth 4.5 out of 5 subs, it’s really a great sounding synth that doesn’t hammer my cpu, which means I can use a bunch of instances!

Really, just go over and download the demo to try it for yourself: http://tone2.com/html/saurus_synthesizer__vst_au.html

  1. Cool program…just wandering if it plays everything out to 88 keys?
I didn’t see any kind of octave shift button on the display. Thanks !

  2. I’m pretty sure the keyboard issue will be fixed shortly. They might have been coding too fast. I’m going to have to check this out and the other products they offer. The sounds definitely caught my attention.
