Softube Tonelux Tilt EQ plugin review

4

OK, so you know I’m a sucker for simple effect plugins right?

I mean, I just like an effect I can turn knobs on without thinking too much, basic eq, basic filter, reverb, stuff like that.

Stuff that just lets you use your ears and find the sound you’re looking for.

The Tonelux Tilt plugin from Softube is another such tool, and that’s why I’ve chosen to show it to you

So let’s check it out!

So…what is Tilt?

ToneluxTiltIt’s a plugin that  aims to give you a quick way to “brighten” or “darken” the sound you’re working with.

If you want your sound or track to be warmer or cooler, all you have to do is turn a single knob.

I like tools like that, so you can understand my excitement!

If you turn the “Tilt” knob to the right, it will cut the lows and boost the highs, if you turn it to the left, it will cut the highs and boost the lows.

Simple!

They have also included high and low filter, a gain knob, polarity, and even the option to change it from the “Tilt” style EQ to more of a Loudness effect which will boost both the highs and the lows as you turn it to the right and cut both hight and the lows as you turn it to the left.

Quick Specs

How does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderWell of course an effect doesn’t have a “sound” on it’s own, or should I say it doesn’t generate any sound by itself.

But the way this plugin works with audio is pretty great in my opinion!

I love how easily I can boost the low end of a kick drum without making it too bass heavy, just round it out by cutting out some of the highs.

If I need more control I can use the filter section, which is very subtle, letting you tweak your sound just right.

Alternatively, I may have a high hat or synth lead that needs a bit more definition in the high end, very easy to do, just turn it to the right!

So it sounds warm or cool, bright or dark, thin or thick, it just all depends on how you choose to turn the knobs.

So what’s the bottom line?

Many of you know how I am when it comes to effects, I like to keep it simple, and I like the effect to do it’s job.

This “tilt” circuit is really awesome, and I can see why it’s such a popular feature on the Tonelux MP1a Mic Pre, being able to quickly warm or brighten a sound source has many benefits.

5subsI give Tonelux Tilt 5 out of 5 subs, I think it’s a very useful and simple effect that can handle many EQ situations with ease.

A lot of times this is all I need to get the sound I need from drums, bass, keys, synth, or any sound really.

It’s such a lightweight plugin that it doesn’t hurt me to throw it on as many tracks as I want, and the basic control of the tilt knob usually allows a quick way to get the sound sitting where I want it.

I know there are tons of effect plugins out there, and some that do really amazing things, but a lot of the time I’m just looking for a very simple tool and Tonelux Tilt definitely fits into my overall philosophy on powerful plugins that are simple to use.

  1. This is a great plugin, used it in years past, it can really save your butt once in awhile in a mix, seems like a simple utility, which I guess it is, but a lot of times when you are producing tracks, and people want more snap in something, or more oomph, or you need to move things out of the way of others, this thing can get the job done without re-thinking your whole eq…. do you know St. Joe if more is going on under the surface in terms of eq? is it just shifting it down, or does it do some intelligent interpolation … i know softube makes some great comps, and interesting eq curve implementation….

  2. you are right about it being a great utility, and it appears its cpu hit is low enough you can instantiate it a lot or on all your tracks… thanks for reminding me of this gem! and keep up the good reviews, watch all your stuff!
