Review: Wide Blue Sound ORBIT Cinematic Synth and Atmospheric Texture Instrument

7

Hey what’s good fam?

Back with some more cinematic sounds for you, this one is from a new company called Wide Blue Sound.

Their background comes from film composing, sound design, and engineering so you know they understand this type of sound very well.

So let’s see how that understanding of sound and texture translates to creating a new instrument for the masses.

What is ORBIT?

It’s an instrument dedicated to cinematic synths and atmospheric textures, based around their orbital synthesis concept.

This means, you create sounds using 4 Orbit “players” and you can control how the sound moves or “orbits” between them.

By including a variety of Orbit types as well as a sound types, you can come up with everything from aggressive rhythmic pulses to smooth ambient textures.

It’s all done directly in the custom Kontakt interface…which I must say, is very beautiful and intuitive.

Quick Specs

  • content: 1GB, 440 presets (snapshots)
  • format: Kontakt 5 Player, Kontakt 5
  • price: $200 ($150 for limited time with code DEFY_GRAVITY)
  • product page: http://www.widebluesound.com/

So how does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderYou know, at first I wasn’t sure what to expect from reading about the instrument….then I played it.

The initial sound is very smooth and lush, just like I like it, but once you start messing with the controls and Orbit parameters, it opens up a whole new world of sound.

I thought it was going to mainly focus on rhythmic, pulsing sounds…but I was totally wrong. Sure you can get some really dope pulses and aggressive rhythmic leads, sequences, and fx, but that’s not all.

I was most surprised with how easily you could create slow, ambient, evolving textures and atmospheric pads…with the simple press of a button called “flow”, and the fact that the sounds continue to evolve over time, even if they aren’t the same length, which creates a lot of variety.

Also, even though the interface doesn’t make sound on it’s own, I can’t help but mention how much it feels like it’s part of the sound, it’s so creative and easy to understand, but the interface itself impacts the sound so much based off of what you can do.

Overall the sound quality is amazing, and the Orbit engine is packed with creativity.

So what’s the bottom line?

Sure there are tons of cinematic libraries out there, each geared towards giving you a different sound, and capturing the sound of their creators.

I’m always anxious to checkout a new developer because I anticipate something fresh, unique, and sounds that I haven’t quite heard before.

I definitely got that with Orbit, and there’s no doubt their background in film composition and sound design really came into play in terms of what they chose to deliver in this product along with the interface they chose to construct to make it more powerful than just the sound library alone.

4subsI give ORBIT 4 out of 5 subs, it sounds amazing from the start but also gives you the power to experiment and stay creative.

There’s so much content here that even if you just used the presets, you’d be happy, but the real fun comes when you start messing around with the Orbit modes, sequencers, effects, and other parameters.

I hope they continue to develop this engine and interface, as it truly is fun to use and powerful. I’d like to see the option to mix Orbit modes, maybe even buttons on each Orbit player with the different modes so you can chop between two players, pulse between another two, and flow between all four with the overall Orbit mode.

I’d also like to see some of the parameters like sequencer steps and rate be a drop down menu instead of a drag up/down option. That’s more of a personal preference than anything though.

Overall, this is a very dope product, refreshing, fun, and it sounds amazing.

If you love atmospheres, pads, and textures like I do, don’t overlook this and thing it’s only for pulsating rhythmic sequences and synths, it covers that as well as the ambient side of sound design very well.
