Review: Sample Logic GAMELAN Kontakt Library

12

Hey what’s good fam!

Today I’ve got a review of the latest product coming from the Sample Logic team.

The product is called GAMELAN….so let’s dig in!

What is GAMELAN?

Gamelan_Sample_LogicAs you may or may not know, traditionally “Gamelan” refers to a traditional form of Indonesian music which primarily focuses on percussion and/or mallet style instruments.

So they sample such instruments and Samplelogicized them…yes, I just made up an actual process for what these guys do to their samples.

So you get the traditional stuff, then of course you get it morphed, twisted, abused, and caressed into new and unique sounds, tones, atmospheres, and instruments.

It all comes in their super powerful and intuitive interface, which allows you to mix up to 4 cores, with 2 soundsources each, for a total of 8 sounds, all moving and twisting about as you see fit.

Of course they cover it all from atmospheres to percussive kits, and even the magical one note combos.

Quick Specs

How does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderAs usual, the sound is quite amazing, and what I love most is the fact that it uses acoustic instruments as the foundation.

I really love when acoustic/organic instruments are taken and turned into something totally different, as the atmospheres and instruments created still retain that organic feel yet they are vastly unique in relation to the original source.

Everything is covered from atmospheres to loops, percussion, hits, kits, synth instruments, as well as melodic and percussive rhythms.

It all sounds oustanding and the power of the interface, morphing, layering, sequencing, and effects really allow you to conjure up your own Gamelan based creations.

So what’s the bottom line?

If you’re looking for something a little exotic yet still super useful in all types of genres from cinematic/sound design to pop, edm, urban, or any other kind of music that needs a little spice, definitely check this out.

5subsI give GAMELAN 5 out of 5 subs, the content is amazing, the interface is powerful and intuitive, and the instrument as a whole is totally inspirational.

I love that you can pull up the traditional instruments, or something totally off the wall, right within the same interface.

Not to mention the fact that you can mix and blend the traditional with the sound design elements to come up with your own audio creations.

  2. Back in 1983 I went to see a real live Gamelan ensemble played by monks. It was amazing although hearing this sample library I have never heard a more fake manufactured representation of the real thing. truly just a collection of old synth recreations found in earlier akai disk its sad really.I wish others could see the real thing to get a deeper understanding of what that music is all about. Usually one monk is the main time keeper of the rest of the orchestra. In general he hits a rock to a beat then the other monks go into a trance like state individually using their instruments along to the main beat of the main time keeper monk.

    • Fake…yet they sample actual Gamelan instruments and musicians? It’s not meant to capture the feel and experience or put the monks in your computer, but deliver content based on the traditional instruments used.

  3. By reading the title, I thought it’s going to be like percussive organic traditional sound that sounds exotic from Indonesia but it’s more like a synth as described on Google (yep, not even in their website).

I would love to buy it if it’s untouched, I mean like a drum sample, that’s it not morphed or anything else.
    That’d be nice.
