Review: MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay on Vintage Fender Rhodes EP

6

Hey what’s good fam?

Back with another review, this time I’m checking out a guitar pedal on my Rhodes

It’s the Carbon Copy from MXR

Let’s check it out!

So what is the Carbon Copy?

mxrcarboncopyIt’s an analog delay pedal, “bucket brigade” style, delay with up to 600ms of delay time.

Of course it’s made for guitars but I like to try different guitar pedals, amps, and fx on my Rhodes as they work great for that too!

You can also use it for synths, samplers, drum machines, and anywhere else you want some outboard fx.

It’s got a true bypass so it passes the clean signal through then the switch isn’t engaged.

3 main buttons for mix, regen (feedback), and delay (time) are included, as well as a button to enable modulation which allows it to emulate the sound of a tape echo.

Quick Specs

How does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderIt has a great silky sound, can be very subtle or cranked up for crazy delay and a bit of noise/crunch.

I usually keep my mix knob turned down, between 9 and 12 o’clock gives me the amount I want.

I do like messing with the regen and delay times, though for my style I love a longer delay time for some smooth ep chords.

The modulation is cool, hard to really hear unless you crank the mix and delay, but even when used on a subtle setting it’s cool…I just wish the modulation controls weren’t internal.

Overall is has a nice sound that I just wasn’t able to replicate using various delay plugins.

So what’s the bottom line?

I love trying new fx and pedals on my Rhodes, it allows you to quickly change the character and there’s so many pedals out there that everyone can find the combination they are looking for.

I’ve used different software as well as apps on my Rhodes and it’s fun to have an actual hardware device on it for sure, I definitely have more on my list I wish to try out.

4subsOverall I give the Carbon Copy 4 out of 5 subs, it definitely adds some movement and character to whatever you put it on, the delays are nice and warm and tweaking to find just the right amount is easy to do with the chunky knobs.

As I mentioned, I do wish the modulation controls were on the outside for my situation, as I may want to change them often as I work on different tracks.

Even still,  it sounds great and definitely enhances the character of my Rhodes when I desire.

You can pick it up at most retailers like Musician’s Friend http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/mxr-m169-carbon-copy-analog-delay-guitar-effects-pedal

Or directly from the jimdunlop.com website
