Review: Impact Soundworks Sonic Forest Evolving Electroacoustic Textures

0

So what is Sonic Forest?

combo-sonic-forestThis is a really cool sound design library with a pretty unique interface and approach to creating sound.

It starts with organic bell/mallet style samples and then adds a “forest” concept on top.

Each parameter in the forest does something different to the sound, it’s sort of a granular style of synth manipulation.

Of course you have randomization, an arp, fx, microtuning, and more, so it’s super flexible.

Oh yeah…it’s 20 bucks and 25% of the sales goes to charity…that’s a super win in my book!

Quick Specs

So how does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderThis is a really cool library, first and foremost, it is made from actual acoustic/real instruments and not just synth sounds.

I’m a sucker for organic content, I lean a lot towards acoustic and natural instruments so I’m always interested when they are used in sound design.

Next, the sound is just really cool, the recordings are well done and once you “plant” a sound and start playing with the forest, all types of creative things start to happen.

I also love the parameter names as it gives you a very unique way of thinking of sound design, also making it useful for everyone no matter what your level of sound design skill may be.

The way the sounds start to evolve and change over time based on what you do in the forest is cool…not to mention the random “seed’ function which makes it even easier to come up with new sounds.

Overall I really like the sound of this library, it’s super flexible and you can get some pretty smooth textures from the otherwise percussive source samples.

No doubt thanks to the sound design, bow playing, and the crazy forest parameters.

So what’s the bottom line?

This is one of those “why don’t you have it yet?” products in my opinion.

4andhalfsubsI give Sonic Forest 4.5 out of 5 subs, it sounds great, has an amazing interface, is inspiring to play with, and benefits charity, what’s not to like?

I love when companies do this quirky experimental instruments, it breaks up to standard sounds and ideas we are used to and sparks your imagination in a new direction.

I dig the interface a lot, it’s simple but useful, and actually powerful in terms of all that you can do do the sound.

I say just go grab a copy, seriously, it’s 20 bucks and well worth more in my opinion.
