Patchbanks Low End Theory Vol 1 classic samples review

10

Yo what’s good fam!

Back with another review for you, this one is from one of my favorite sample companies, Patchbanks.

I’m checking out one of their classic/vintage sample collections.

Let’s dig in!

So what is Low End Theory Vol 1?

lowend_theory_samplesThis is the first volume in another series of classic sample material ready to be chopped up.

I’ve been a fan of them for many years, and they have put out a few different series geared towards classic/vintage style samples.

This one has 3 volumes, and I wanted to start at the beginning even though I’ve been using them for a while.

It’s 25 stereo wav files of music created with live bass, strings, guitar, synths, keys, etc, all played to have a vintage feel and sound.

No steams of separate instruments so this is straight like sampling from a vinyl, cassette, 8-track, or whatever else you wish to sample from.

Quick Specs

So how does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderMan these guys were the first I came across putting together samples like this when most were doing construction kits.

I’m talking years ago, so I pretty much know to expect great sounding content.

It sounds like music, classic, vintage, soulful, music.

What I dig is that the samples are pretty long, so it’s not like having pre-chopped samples, there’s plenty of content to work with in these files.

I like that there are change ups in the samples and they all have their own feel, almost like a dope album of a soulful band.

I mean the samples are 3 minutes long or anything, but they are long enough that you can find plenty of licks, chords, hits, and chops.

I also love that they don’t put drums on them, the music is wide open and ready to chop.

The recording has a vintage feel to it, not all the way low-fi but just enough grit to give it the right character.

So what’s the bottom line?

I’m always happy to see when they put out a new classic sample library, as I know it will give me plenty of useful content.

If you like to sample, and don’t want to deal with record clearance and such, you definitely need to check their product out.

4andhalfsubsI give Low End Their  Vol 1 a 4.5 out of 5 subs, it’s a great collection of classic soul samples with plenty of content to chop and mangle.

Either way, this sound design team has been consistent with these types of products and I’ve been a customer myself for years, way before I even started this website.

    • Yeah, I’ve been using their stuff for years. Figured I’d start with the first one and do a video on each in the series. I only have one more to do for the bootleg series and already did the soul soup series lol.

  3. SJ: I was hoping that you were going to review this release….And “You Did Just That”. This was another great review from S&G.com. I enjoyed what you created from the samples. I rate this kit @ 4.5/5.0. The sounds are clean & pure hip hop/RnB genre. Thanks again.

  4. Great stuff saintjoe! Thanks for turning me onto these…. Kinda cuts the difference between crate digging and worrying about clearances, and forces you to find your own OG way to use it. I always hated “construction” kit stuff, and we all hate tired loops, but again, this splits the difference of finding some cool sounding stuff without getting sued!
