Yes, it’s Friday…you already know what’s up.
Big Fish baby!
Today I’m taking a blast from the past…well…it’s not old, but you know.
I’m checking out Detroit Soul, a library dedicated to recreating that 1960s – 70s musical vibe.
You know…the stuff many of us like to sample anyway?
Yeah…so let’s check it out
What is Detroit Soul?
It’s a library dedicated to the classic soul and rnb records that came out of Detroit during the 60s and 70s
Filled with live drums, live strings, live horns, live bass, live keys, etc
It’s got that classic soul feel that a lot of people look for when sampling records,
yet you get all the elements broken down for your slicing and dicing pleasure.
It’s like having access to the master recordings from some of the dope soul records from back in the day
Quick Specs
- content: 1.45gb
- format: apple, rex, wav, rmx, acid
- price: $99
How does it sound?
It definitely has that classic vibe to it, big funky horns, smooth keys, a few strings to throw in and all the drums you can handle.
Not only do you get the drum loops, but you also get them broken down into drum elements, as well as different mic positions.
So if you just want the overhead, you got it, if you just want the room…you got it…if you want to mix them up a bit…go for it.
As far as quality, pretty much what you expect from Big Fish, recorded well, no audio glitches or defects
it really has that “sound” so to speak, that crate diggers love to sample.
I like that some of the loops are pretty long, it gives you quite a bit of different material to work with.
What’s the bottom line?
This is one of those secret weapon libraries, when you want to get that classic sound but you don’t want to mess with royalties and records.
I like to mix and match riffs and loops to create my own “samples” that I then turn around and chop up. Maybe throw some distortion on the loop or throw a vinyl plugin on there with some tape saturation to really give it that funk.
Overall I give this library 4 out of 5 subs, it’s usable, has a great sound, and gives you something different than the current radio targeted libraries that seem to be all over the place.
No matter if you want to create the full feel of the classic soul music or you want to create your own soul sample stash, it works out well.
Go on and check it out at big fish: Detroit Soul
let me know what ya think
I give these samples a 5 outta 5. That is a nice beat you made. Do you produce as well? I heard you quickly rep Maschine.lol You seem to do pretty well with it, but I am down with Reason 5.0 all day bruh. I will be getting these samples thanks to you. Be blessed. -Echo
@Echo, thanks for checkin it out fam! Not sure what you mean by “do you produce as well” since this whole site is about making music π
Reason is cool lol, just not for me, Maschine is that joint man lol.
Nice review, I’m feelin this one Joe.
@Priych, thanks for checking it out fam!
Ha! I guess that question does sound funny. What I mean, is do you produce music for others or yourself for radio play, albums, etc… Not just for fun. I write, produce and perform for all of the above. I hope that is clearer. lol.
@Echo,hahaha, cool man it’s all good, figured that’s what you meant I just had to mess with ya lol
I produce for myself and others, etc π Sorry, just
Nice! You should use that beat as your new intro, lol.
@Brian, ahahahaha, nah lol, I like my intro π
i like this kit right here. it is something kinda different from the norm. i could rock with this.
@TeeBlack, def something different man, that’s what I like about it.
Dude, you have the coolest job.Big Fish Audio is great too.I primarily use their stuff to sample.I like this Soul pack.
@Ryan, I wish this was my job man lol, that would be awesome π But yeah, Big Fish got the goods man, hands down.
I’ve had this one for a few months now and have been very impressed with the quality. I approach these kind of sets the same way you did in the video, loop sets can be taken so much further with that type of method. Thanks for review!
@Metatron72, I’m not surprised at all fam! And yeah, I’ve been using libraries this way for a long time. What I used to do is just use the free version of sony acid, and just go through and make a bunch of “samples” for me to chop up later. Throw iZotope Vinyl on em, etc…It definitely gives you more options and allows you to really dig into these libraries without worrying about what others do. I mix and match stuff that is similar to make new “samples” that I can work with.
It’s good stuff, still gives you that “crate digging” sound if you want it, without the hassle.
I may have to do a vid just showing how I do it lol, it’s pretty fun, especially with Acid since it has that great timestretching, I don’t even have to match tempos lol.
I does have that “vibe” that you speak of, I dunno…I’m kind of partial to the Soul Town library myself (a friend has it). What’s your take on comparing the two?
@jamari, I like them both, this is more flexible though since SoulTown is already put together, this one you get all the individual loops and riffs to do whatever you want with…Soul Town is like a collection of dope rare grooves ready to chop π
I like them both though, but this is more flexible.
@saintjoe, I might have to check it out next time I’m in the market for some sounds…then again (finances provided)that’s a regular occurrence π
I can appreciate libraries such as this, granted I like being nostalgic going through vinyl and reading liner notes, etc.. But there’s times when you just want to get it in and not fool around with cleaning the audio up as much and tweaking & chopping to the point where it’s almost indistinguishable from the original or even trying to stumble around on the keys w/ whatever plug-in. Some may call me lazy yet it all depends on my mood, groove and motivation at that moment.
@jamari, no doubt lol, I feel ya man
Yeah,Joe. As always, the groove was nice. So when are you going teach me? (lol)
@William, ahahahaha lol, thanks for watching man!
dope samples man, thats my type of ill, can flip those samples in a million ways
@1/2 cUT 1/2 lit, word fam, thanks for checking this out
Thank’s Saint Joe for showing this video and talking about this amazing sample’s man it’s great ! It give’s a Dj’s like me more options for sample’s than having to crate dig for them . I’m not saying am lazy, But stuff like this save’s time.
@DJ Jambone, word man, many ways to get things done just gotta think outside the box! Thanks for watching.
This one sounds good, I was looking at gettin the Vintage RnB library on Big Fish.I been looking for that sound to mix up. Cool technique u got choppin the loops bro. Later.
@Mike, yeah this and vintage rnb are both on point man, nice classic sound.
im feeling this, its definitely something different to chop and put into my production..i wish it was like 59 bucks though..lol
@ricodaproducer, lol, 59 bucks you wouldn’t get near as much content lol. Check out soultown libraries on the motion samples page https://soundsandgear.com/motion-samples
Yeah Im diggin this one.. I heard a couple a joints in the beginning that I could definitely rock wit, cut up, chop, and play into some Fiyah.
Nice review dawgy.
@Triple-X, word fam, thanks for checkin it out!
I like the beat you created with the samples. π Detroit Soul with a twist of St. Joe!
@DJ Digital Josh, word lol, thanks for watching
