I wasn’t sure what to think when this kit was promoted as the “J-Dilla” Kit, as I ultimately thought about the raw, gritty, boom bap style of drums, or the hundreds of kits floating around the net with drum sounds ripped from his beats.ย However, this kit is more about processing drums using similar techniques and pulling out sound qualities. For me, this one is more of a smooth, neo soul style kit. Sure it’s got the punch, grit, and snap, of a traditional boom bap kit…. but for me, I really like it for more of a mellow soulful vibe.

Yeah… I like this kit ok… but not what i was expecting. I could use them though….but I was expecting more Boom Bap…like you said. But its cool though
@Knock, Yes that’s how I was, but dig the mellow feel.
This kit is trash to me. 25 bux is the going rate for this but save your money and b/c this is not going to give you anything close to that dilla sound.
@The ESS, do you think that the NI Conant Garden’s matches that sound? Because in my opinion they sound very similar. It’s not a “hard” or “rugged” sound, more smooth and mellow. Thanks for your feedback.
I purchased this kit several months ago but this before it go popular. I think dude got the sound down. I was able to spot very similar sounding drums from this kit in dillas production
more so on his softer sounding beats. Oh and lots jaylib stuff.
I think there should have been a mix of both but still the sound pack is good
@chris, Cool man, thanks for the feedback, it’s definitely going after the more mellow style imo.
drums sound good. I like this new site btw
@J, thanks fam, more coming just been busy with this maschine update, if you not on the mailing list make sure you subscribe ๐
Sounds great, love to get it
@jayjae, thanks for checking it out fam!
Love the kit man! By the way, what were you using to get that rhodes sound? I’ve been looking for that quality level of rhodes via samples or vst plug-in.
Let me know.
Thanks Saint Joe
@Asharpe, thanks for checking it out. Man I think I played this with the Neo Soul Keys library if I remember correctly http://neosoulep.com
this is boom bap. what are you all on about???
this kit is sick!
@yaren, it’s definitely a nice smooth kit, many thing “rugged” or “hard” when they hear boom bap. To me, this is more smooth boom bap. I dig it I use it for a lot of neo soul/smoother tracks when I still want that boom bap sound.
I’ love these reviews Joe. I picked up this kit last week, it sounds different from what’s being heard of the youtube channel. I’m in love with it personally. This is Blap, great kits
I hear he’s dropping boom bap phonetics 2.. Is this true? Have you heard anything about it?
@Kevin Armijo, Glad you dig the videos man, that’s why I do it. I know he was working on one but I haven’t talked to him in a while so not sure what’s up with it.
Oh man and I forgot to mention the fact that he added Programs was a plus for me to. Put us on some new boom bap material Joe!
I hear ya man! Checkout the Drum Weapons joint, you may dig it.
Big Homie, what type of or synth keyboard do you use, and does it do well with Maschine ?
@Brooknam, I just have a basic midi controller, works fine.
Would it be a conflict of interest if I asked exactly which one use in your tutorials ? Dont want to create heat between you and sponsors, feel me. Just wanted to know which one to get, when I see a homie like you using one, I know its good because of the weight of influence you have on us as followers, if its used in your vids, I know its good.
@Brooknam, no sir, I’ve just had a few over the years so it depends on which video you’re watching. I’ve used an m-audio axiom pro, a novation ultranova, and an evolution mk249c (current)
I’m in the market for a new one so it may change again ๐
