Soul Soup samples vol 2 review

47

Yo what’s good fam! Back with some more soul samples for you to dig into.

I’m checking out volume 2 of “Soul Soup” from patchbanks.com

I love all their soul samples man, really has the sound of sounds and snippets from records and songs.

All royalty free of course! (I love a lot of their other stuff too, been a fan for years ever since they were on eBay)

Let’s dig in!

So what is Soul Soup vol 2?

It’s part 2 of a dope collection of soul/funk style samples

These aren’t individual loops, each sample is it’s own stereo file, ready to chop up, just like if you were digging for them yourself.

They always have a very organic and musical sound to them, not artificial, so they really give you that “soul sample” vibe.

There’s 40 “samples” in the collection, with varying styles of funk and soul goodness

Quick Specs

How does it sound?

As you’d expect by now, this collection has a real, authentic and organic quality to it.

It’s always fun to work with these collections because not only is there plenty to work with in each sample, but they do not follow any “format”.

What I mean is, each one is like it’s own song, not a variation of the previous one.

The recordings are done with excellent quality and great choice of instruments.  The samples themselves really show the skill of the musician responsible for putting them together.

It’s not just about the skill, but also the “feel” and these samples have a great feel. However, while it has a vintage sound and feel, the quality of it is not vintage at all.

So what’s the bottom line?

Anytime someone asks me for collection of soul type samples, I always mention the patchbanks collections, this is another addition to a great line of soul sample products for today’s producers.

I give Soul Soup vol 2 a 4.5 out of 5 subs, this is just a great sounding, variety filled library with plenty to keep you busy in each of the 40 samples.

One thing…I’m ALWAYS left wanting more, they are that good. The price to content ratio is great, but I bet people would be willing to pay a couple more dollars for even more samples. Or…I guess they can just keep releasing new volumes at such a great price 🙂

If you want some soul/funk samples, and don’t want to worry about royalties or sample clearance…just get these.

No seriously, their whole collection of vintage samples is a must have….really.

  1. It is a great library to be sure. I do like vol. 1 just a bit more though. This one has more pad type sounds it seemed, while vol 1 had a much funkier vibe. Either way both are a mainstay in my portable library.

  3. I was checking out Vol. 1’s demo just the other day… These are really nice collections: high-quality and, as you pointed out, love the fact that you can basically make more than one beat out of one loop: they’re mad long! 😀 Good stuff fam, thanks for reviewing, probably gonna cop both…

      • @saintjoe, from a “studio” musician vs “technically” trained/gifted musician standpoint I ask the following: Since I am mildly gifted at the keys, but very gifted at production, samples like these are vital to me. Technically I could just put a hot beat over these samples and never chop ’em up and claim production credits, but I feel that that would definitely be a cheap move. However, the age old debate between musicians and “studio” musicians is that samples themselves are cheap too. I believe you spoke on this a while back, but since these samples are so fresh, it is tempting to not chop ’em or anything. Thoughts please.

  6. Hi Joe, Firstly thanks for your great reviews and sick beats.
I had a question on these.
I don’t have a machine and normally use loops to make tracks at the moment.
My mum and dad loved soul music but my mum sadly passed away recently so I wanted to make a track for my dad with a soul sound but the words from a poem I wrote for my mums funeral.
He loves the other tracks I make but this would be for him and my mum.I dont know if I need a machine or something similiar to make them work?

    Thanks in advance

    Marco
