Review: IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo Mobile Audio/MIDI Interface

9

Hey what’s good fam, got another review for ya!

Today I’m checking the latest mobile interface from IK Multimedia.

Let’s dig in!

What is the iRig Pro Duo?

iRig_Pro_DuoThis is a mobile/portable interface that is truly portable, meaning it can actually run on batteries.

Oh, and it’s a stereo interface, so not just for guitar or mic hookup! I’ve personally been asking for that for a while.

Other than that it’s got 2 xlr combo jacks, 1/4″ outputs, MIDI in and out, headphone out, and even has phantom power.

Basically, it has everything you’d need in an interface, runs on batteries, and works with Mac, PC, Android, and iOS.

Quick Specs

  • connectivity: 2 x XLR (phantom power)/1/4″ combo inputs, 2 x 1/4″ outputs, headphone out, MIDI in/out
  • power: USB, battery, 9VDC
  • price: $199

How does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderI have to say the inputs on the iRig Pro Duo are very clean, even at high gain levels.

I didn’t really notice too much noise until I turned the gain all the way up when using a dynamic mic, backing it off just a little seemed to fix that issue.

I wouldn’t normally record with that much gain but of course I wanted to test it just in case!

When recording line level I got exactly what I put into the device, the recorded quality sounded like what I heard coming out of my devices, which is a good thing.

Overall I think it has a great sound, both for line level instrument input and microphone input, at least with the two dynamic mics I tested it with.

No artifacts in the recording and I didn’t find any detail missing from the auido.

So what’s the bottom line?

If you’ve been waiting for a truly portable audio interface this is definitely something to take a look at. Not only for iOs and Android but even as a small unit for laptops, tablets, and 2-in-1 devices.

4andhalfsubsI give the iRig Pro Duo 4.5 out of 5 subs, it’s a compact interface with plenty of connectivity for serious work, not to mention it’s truly mobile being that it can run on 2 AA batteries.

I personally would have prefered a “non shiny” finish on the front, something more matte like their iRig Pro, HD, and similar devices.

I only had a few times where I got a little bit of feedback and had to unplug the device to reset it, which I’m used to doing dealing with iOS, not to mention the fact that I’m still running on an iPad 2, so it most definitely could have been something on my end.

Having the ability to control direct monitoring is super helpful, and the fact that you have regular 1/4″ inputs, and outputs allows you to hook it up in most situations. I was also happy to see they included MIDI input/output as well, making it a super compact but full featured interface.

If you don’t need a lot of inputs, and really want something that is truly portable (battery powered is awesome) definitely give this one a good look.

  1. Yo, Saintjoe 2.0, That was a good review video. Man you was using garage band that got my attention real quick. Number two you had a hardware synth hooked up which showed flexibility. But man the icing on the cake was when you went with live instrumentation using a microphone, a good one at that I might add. That just took it took it to another level. I’m buying that damn thing just because I’m a fan of IK multimedia and watching this video. I think shiny is good.

Man I tell you what if you had followed that up with a Logic Pro X video showing how you imported it from garage band and then started using some IK multimedia plugins to finish mixing, I would’ve been in tears. But yea man that was a five sub video review. Got damn, I’m hyped up. And they got they new mic modeling t-racks extension. It’s on.

    • Ahahahahahahaha! Glad you dug it man, just having fun and showing a bit of how I like to work and use things. I don’t use Logic but it’s all good, GB is dope and simple man, can’t complain. Also, that Mic Room joint from IK looks crazy, have you messed with it yet?

The shiny shows too much fingerprints, I’m not a fan of shiny finish on any gear though, just personal preference. I dislike it on Maschine Studio too, didn’t like it on the Roland Fa-08 either LOL

      • I thought you used gloves man, Lol. Nah but I was looking at the mic room and the stealth limiter. The cool part is I can actually demo those plugins since I have T-racks CS. The bad part is my studio is apart right now because of upgrades. I’ll probably get them anyway and test them later. I’ve got the whole collection of plugins except those two. They make some solid plugins, and too me they’re better than the UAD equivalents. Let me duck shots fired.
