Review of the Embertone Friedlander Violin

6

Hey what’s good fam!

Today I am reviewing a violin for Kontakt Player from Embertone called the “Friedlander Violin”

It’s a really straight forward instrument that aims to capture the subtle realism of playing a violin.

Let’s check it out

So what is the Friedlander Violin?

friedlander_violinIf you know anything about Embertone, you know their goal is to really capture an authentic and what they call “living” sound with whatever instrument they are trying to create.

The concept behind the Friedlander is just that, to capture a deeply sampled, highly playable, and authentically “living” violin sound.

It runs in the free Kontakt Player, and has many controls, options, and keyswitches to provide deep control over the playback and character of the library.

It’s got true legato, true portamento, round robin, and a deep library of 3500+ samples to give it an authentic sound.

Quick Specs

How does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderNow I know we’ll get some experts that actually play violin, or that own all the high end orchestral libraries that will pick at this product.

For me, it’s very simple, does it sound like a violin, and if so, is it easy for me to play?

The answer for me is yes, I like that it’s very easy for me to play and “perform” thanks to the vibrato and dynamics assigned to the MW in one of the patches. ย  Of course if you want to control them separately there are patches setup for that, and if you wish to control every single parameter via midi there is a patch ready and waiting for you as well.

I found overall that it didn’t sound too “sterile” when playing the violin. I did find the legato to be pretty smooth, which no doubt helps the playability, but I also like the fact that you can turn it off, or leave it on and engage ensemble at the same time.

I did find myself wishing to adjust the attack a tad bit when playing staccato, but overall I felt it has a good sound.

Being able to engage the round robin as needed can also aid in bringing a bit more realism to your playing.

So what’s the bottom line?

Overall I think it’s a great library at an affordable price that can fit into most budget.

Sure you can go out and spend much more on a violin library, and that’s totally fine, but for someone looking for a simple library with plenty of control that sounds good, this is definitely one to consider.

4subsI give the Friedlander Violin 4 out of 5 subs, I think the interface is nicely done, the instrument sounds good, and it’s easy to control yet deep enough for power users to dive into.

Head on over to their site and checkout the demos, as well as all the extensive technical stuff that went into it:ย http://embertone.com/instruments/friedlanderviolin.php#2
