Hey remember I told you I had some good news about the former CEO of Openlabs?….
Official press release below…I wanted to tell you sooner but you know how it goes
Includes: Large Format Multi-Touch Screen Controllers, MacBook® Music Production Station Docksand Keyboard Production Stations at Unbelievable Prices and Performance
Austin, Texas – October 5, 2010 – Music Computing, announced today it will roll-out the new company in a special *Live* broadcast October 20, 2010 (12:00pm CST) at http://www.MusicComputing.com, where it will showcase eight (8) new hardware and two (2) new software products.
Building upon years of experience in producing world-renown computer-enhanced musical instruments, Music Computing products represent a new beginning and a quantum leap in design, price and performance.
The company’s goal is to invent new technologies and integrate them with proven standards to create the best possible instruments for today’s musicians. Most of its products are cross-platform in nature and will work within the Microsoft Windows or Mac OS operating systems, allowing more flexibility than ever.
Leading off the roll-out event are all-in-one keyboard production stations that will be the most powerful available, but priced at keyboard workstation prices. Keyboard production stations can be
loosely defined as keyboard workstations that are connected to a computer, which is needed to provide additional processing power and features. While keyboard workstations are suited for live performance and sketching out ideas for a song, keyboard production stations, with built in high-power computer cores, allow users to go from composition to recording to mixing and finally mastering of songs that are ready for radio or direct Internet distribution.
Up next will be laptop keyboard production station docks. With the emergence of high-power laptops, it is now possible to utilize them for professional music production. The new laptop keyboard production station docks, the first of its kind, are mainly designed for Apple’s MacBook Pro series laptops, but will work with virtually any laptop sized 13” to 17” in diameter, turning them instantly into full-blow professional keyboard production stations.
Third will be the company’s new line of large format multi-touch screen controllers. There will be two versions, one driven by a HD video projector designed for live performance that is transparent on both sides and one driven by a HD LED television for studio use. Standard sizes offered are 32” and 42” but the company can produce special order versions up to 250” in diameter.
Allowing for multi-touch and instant visual feedback, these controllers are compatible with both Windows and Mac OS and are constructed to the highest professional quality, yet affordably priced. Options include multi-touch screen controllers integrated into a control console complete with Music Computing’s computer DAW (digital audio workstation) computer core and audio interface, ready to be used with virtually any software to compose, record and produce music in any home or professional studio.
“We dissected everything down to the smallest possible particles and then redesigned it all,” states Victor Wong, CEO, “what we have created can only be described as a quantum leap in music instrument technology.“
In addition to the products detailed within this press release, there will be several more surprises. Complete information and demonstrations of all 10 products will be featured at the *Live* Broadcast as well a full press release issued on that same day.

That’s some good news. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s coming next. I heard that Open Labs has new owners now. The company has always been top notch but it sounds like they are going to take the company & products to another level.
I love my Miko and use it almost everyday and I still learn something new all the take with it. I’m glad to hear that the prices will be more affordable too (hopefully the prices will be cut significantly so more people can afford them…$4000 -$9000 is really too much for most.

@Madbull1971, word, this is NOT Openlabs, they are still doing their thing, this is Victor Wong’s company, a totally different company with a totally different concept it seems.
He left OL a while back around around May….his products and pricing seem to be a little more in tune with the market, can’t wait to actually try something out!
[Reply]
Can’t wait to check this out!! The Open Labs products are a great new technology for music production.

Me being an Open Labs customer, seems like a kick in the balls. OL having such loyal customers praising and “riding” for their OL gear, Why Victor Wong, who was basically a founding member of OL, would sell the company (OL), take the (our) money and start a whole new brand of competing gear for less money? Why couldn’t he have just stayed with OL and put this stuff out with the OL brand? Also, me being a regular to watch the O-Live broadcasts at their peak, I’m wondering did Vic get the ideas for all these products from us (OL forum users & O-Live watchers) because all these things were a regular discussion there. Now us OL customers are left with gear that won’t have any support in the next year while the new owners try to bail water out of a sinking ship with holes in their buckets.

@C-Wealth Music, Victor didn’t sell Open Labs, he was forced out of the company. They did not pay him for months and months. He was done very wrong and now he has made a comeback.

@C-Wealth Music, Vic was gone way before OL was sold, he did not sell OL to new owners, also, he wasn’t operating as CEO for quite some time before he left.
Basically when I talked to him after he left, he was just not happy with the direction of OL overall. This was before any talk of auctions or the company being sold, I didn’t hear about that till months later when it was discovered in the austin newspaper.
Music Computing was created and products were being designed/produced before while OL was still “doing their thing” he just kept it quite for obvious reasons, until he was read to launch.

@saintjoe,
wrong, Victor ran Open Labs into the ground by taking the lead on development and creating products that no one wanted to buy for the prices he set. Then he spent the companies money on ridiculous parties and gave away free keyboards to his friends while his employees went hungry. He left OL covered in shame and is now probably stealing their ideas to start this new farce of a company.

@truthseeker, two sides to every story as always, I’m not for or against either side, just stating that this isn’t openlabs and it wasn’t started after openlabs was “sold off”.
As in any situation, I want to see the product, corp politics get ugly, especially when there is a split, so I have no desire to get in between the mudslinging lol.
The info I was told, is what I have shared, from people that were involved.
I’ve learned, from dealing with many different companies and business folks, to stay neutral, and share info on the product as it’s given to me, not to get personal and choose sides, because on the outside looking in, you just never know how things went down.

@saintjoe, you comments about Victor not being the CEO and leaving when he did are irrelevant as to the dynamics of the company. He was still in charge in many ways as in product development, marketing, artist relations and pricing. As well as developing new products for Open Labs which he probably stole and is now releasing under this new company. I’m not mud slinging, just adding to the rumor mill like everyone else.

@truthseeker, Uhhh how are they irrelevant? When he was gone he was gone lol…can’t get more relevant than that yo!
And I’m not talking about you mudslinging, I’m talking about between the two companies, dude I can care less about all that! All I care about is the gear. You ALWAYS hear rumors, stories, accusations, on both sides of a company split, period.
We can think, assume, ponder, imagine, or whatever else, as to what happened. I reported what I was told…when I talked to Victor back in May or April, he told me he was gone from OL and was about to launch his own company, nothing was said about OL going down, being sold, etc…all I was told is differing opinions on the direction of the products.
It’s doesn’t matter to me, these companies don’t have to answer to me lol, I’m just an outsider like everyone else wanting to see what the new gear is.
Only reason I brought it up was because it was assumed that this was born out of OL being sold to new owners, which is why I stated he wasn’t even there when they were being “auctioned” and I first heard about this before any of that stuff even happened.
It’s a new company, its new gear….that’s all I care about

@so wong, the touchscreen looked like led with touch kits I’ve seen myself before.
I don’t know all the backstory but like many I wasn’t very impressed with what I saw so far. The pricing isn’t that great either for what’s on offer. Still want to learn more about it.
What is this Roland product you speak of and where can I find out about it? Who can I talk to?

@AO Da Great, word yo, figured that would spark your interest
[Reply]
seems like alot of animosity toward this new company…
anyway all I can say is I have seen what i believe is a prototype of the multitouch projector control (there is a video up is you search hard enough) and if that is what it is, and it is any where near affordable i would jump on it. it would make live shows so much more fun. i hope good tech comes from this at decent prices. I have been getting sick of seeing things like midi controllers costing $499 for 61 keys when we used to be able to buy full worksations synths for close to that. i know they don’t cost a 1/4 of that to make….
and lets face it. the plastic casing on alot of these “pro” series controllers are crap. ok so I have officially ranted completely off topic sorry lol.

saintjoe Reply:
October 22nd, 2010 at 8:39 pm
@truthseeker, I am a bit underwhelmed at the moment. The standalone daws/computers aren’t anything special, I built a much better system for less, more powerful.
They didn’t actually “show” anything, just a bunch of pictures, only thing we physically saw on the broadcast was the touchscreen.
I think the touchscreen products are cool but I don’t see why i can’t just go out and buy a touchscreen myself?
The production station…verdict still out on that. The specs seem nice though I really don’t get the core 2 duo thing, I like 64bit, it’s the one thing that kept me from pursuing openlabs for a rig, but it seems to be build on the inferior boards, 8gb seems to be the max so it’s dual channel not triple channel memory. Seems to be build on the 1156 sockets instead of the 1366 sockets, for audio, the 1366 is better.
all that aside, I want to actually see it, see some demos, hear some sounds, see what the OS is like, etc.
physically, they aren’t really much to look at from the pictures so folks want to SEE.
I think many were let down, so much hype and we didn’t even get to really see what they are or what they can do. I assume more videos, etc will come up, but who knows.
Maybe a little competition is good, so now OL can come with a 64bit machine at a little bit more competitive price point and make things really interesting
[Reply]
and one more thing the only reson victor has any support is he is a coke dealer think about it.

@C-Wealth Music, seems to be the general feeling among many of us so far, we don’t even know what these machines do, how the OS works or anything. The launch wasn’t very well executed at all and didn’t raise much interest other than all of us wondering “what the heck?” Lol
[Reply]
Well i heard it from Darren direct . the spec’s and the motherboard.are junk you can build all of this yourself with i7 760 and true trip thread ram for half and it will run all of your needs and then some.

@junk, yeah I built my own i7 based machine, I’m pretty let down these aren’t even running the tripple channel memory chips, all in all, nothing too exciting at the moment. I’m interested to see what OL comes with in their 64 bit machines, and I want to learn more about this roland thing I’ve been hearing about, someone needs to put me in touch with their product team!
