Making a beat with Motu BPM factory sounds

34

Still exploring Motu BPM, making a beat using just the factory sounds this time, no expansions or anything.

Everything in here comes from the factory library.

It’s a nice little workstation, with the expansion packs it becomes even more powerful, despite some little quirks hear and there, I like it.

I find myself opening it more when I don’t feel like messing with samples, and don’t want to deal with a daw…now only if I could open my vsts in it ๐Ÿ™‚

check it out and let me know what ya think.

  2. Nice look on the beats! At one time I almost pulled the trigger on BPM then opted out once I got wind of Eco. So far, for me anyway, I feel the combination of Maschine & Eco is a good fit for what they both can do in tandem. Not to mention if you add some other NI goodness like Urban Arsenal 1-2, sample libs as well as the record store dollar bin…I’m good for a solid minute or two. But as they say “one man’s meat is another man’s poison”, that being said we all have to feel our way around into our comfort zones.

    • @jamari, I hear ya man, it’s all good, you know I’m equal opportunity, I like how you can expand BPM with UVI/Motu sounds, that’s a good look. It gives me a different workflow, sorta like working on a keyboard again because their sounds load pretty fast. I use it more for making stuff from scratch than chopping samples and such. I use it with the Maschine controller too ๐Ÿ™‚

There’s definitely no shortage of good tools available man, I like to try them all, if they fit my workflow, I keep them, if not…they get pushed to the side lol.

  3. Like the beat man, very nice. The sound is gonna make keep BPM. I noticed when I previewed my sounds through Live’s browser and then the same sound through BPM’s browser there was a big difference. MOTU’s audio engine is really cool. I’m just gonna deal with the shortcomings of the interface and workflow. I got my MPD32 handling transport and pads, but I’m still trying make some permanent assignments for the knobs and faders. All that seems kinda futile though with the assignments being on per pad/kit basis. Any luck on your end with that?

    • @Metatron72, Thanks fam, you are right the sound engine is superb lol.

I haven’t finished mapping yet, but it seems their stuff responds to the default midi cc map, so I’m going to look in one of my old synth manuals, and see if they match up properly. Then I’ll manually make some settings in a maschine template so I can control knobs and such.

Good thing is, you can set midi to control whatever bank you’re on, so mapping once will let you control whichever bank/pad you happen to have selected at the time.

I don’t know how the mpd maps, I thought they had a specific file for bpm? But I’m sure you could do it with the mpd editor.

      • @saintjoe, The MPD maps pretty straightforward and old school. Choose a channel, note# or cc. That why some of these plugins drive me crazy, I prefer them providing a list I can match up, or a txt file I can edit. I know BPM will pick up some of the standard ones, midi cc 7 for volume for example. My problem is say you want to map the filter, if it’s not turned on you can’t map it. And you can’t turn the filter on unless the pad has a sound loaded. If you change sounds on the pad your assignment resets. It’s like they think a midi learn here and there is what we want rather than mapping the whole GUI.
The mpd maps from motu have no default knob or fader assigns.

Yeah man I’ll be kicking it old school with a midi chart all day too lol.

        • @Metatron72, hahahahaha, I feel ya man, they can def improve the midi learn/mapping of this.

That’s why Maschine with it’s controller is so awesome, it’s just all hand on. But I’m still liking BPM and I can map most of the basic stuff I use the most, I don’t mind tweaking some of that stuff with the mouse out of habbit, sometimes it’s quicker lol.

    • @Cane, I just used controller editor to setup a basic template, made it match the pad notes that are default in Maschine, then found out which cc the record/stop/play buttons responded to…and mapped those.

You can have the template if you want it, it’s not complete yet, I want to map knobs and such.

    • @Madbull Studios, no doubt man, I like the workflow of it as a workstation, with the different expansions they have for it, the uvi/motu sounds.

it’s a cool lil joint man

if I’m doing something that doesn’t include chopping samples, I’m starting to open this most of the time, instead of ableton live.

    • @Swamp, thanks for checking it yo. I did like 2 or 3 similar videos with Maschine when I first got it, using only the factory sounds that came with it. Also did the same with btv when I first got it last year.

    • @mehdo, no doubt yo, still haven’t done a review on it, just showing it off. Like I did with Maschine, I want to spend some time with it before I post a review on it, but I definitely like it for sure. Keep me posted on your setup man, I know that’s how I built up my gear, it was all used when I had hardware stuff, nothing wrong with that!

  8. Whattup St. Joe. Tight videos and beats! Quick question/comment: I’ve been checking out some of the comments and debates on the NI Maschine forums regarding Maschine vs. MPC. One dude said he loved being able to make beats on the go ala the MPC 500 (lol). Man, have you checked out the Ipad and Ipod Touch/iphone apps.? A new app. called Nanostudio blows the MPC 500 (which retails for $599) out of the water! It has 4 synths, a sampler (with visual waveform sample editing), a sequencer and a mixer! I can even hook my portable Vestax turntable up to it and sample directly to it via the USB port included with the ‘Camera Connection Kit’. The interface and workflow reminds me of my beloved Maschine:) and it only costs $15. Check it out if you haven’t already: http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2010/06/05/whoa-its-an-iphone-mpc-nanostudio/
