Fatloud Dust XL Series sample pack review

Fatloud Dust XL Series sample pack review

Back at you again with another review from Fatloud. This time it’s another one from their XL series (easily one of my favorite series)

This is where they give you tons of sounds, already split into their own folders, instead of construction kits.

This is really smart, I know I do this on my own with anything that comes in a construction kit, I separate it all before I even listen to it, so all my synths, strings, bass, brass, winds, etc….are all together.

The first one we reviewed from this series was Black and Gold, and it was dope…let’s see if Dust is dope as well

What’s up with the Dust?

Well the XL series from Fatloud is basically the “anti construction kit” and I love it. You get all the sounds separated into their own folders, so your brass, bass, keys, etc are all together.

Dust is a new collection of all original, custom created, royalty-free loops and samples.

You get brass, strings, synths, keys, drumloops, drum hits, one shots, fx, and percussion. All separated and ready to go.

This collection was touched up with a little vinyl flavor, but only enough to give it a little “dirt” yet it still sounds very new school instead of like classic hip hop, it’s a nice mix.

Quick Specs

  • Content: 200 loops, 123 one shot samples
  • Format: 24bit Acidized Wav, 16 bit wav, 24 bit aiff, apple loops, rex,
  • Price: $45.00

How does it sound?

Like everything else Fatloud puts out, the sound is always crisp and clean. Everything is processed well and ready to go with no strange artifacts, cracks, clicks, or any other undesired noises.

The production quality is always on point, and I’m always happy at how diverse they are in style and content.  It really feels like a huge melting pot of different sounds that all have a similar “dirt shine” to them.

You can tell they were processed to work together, yet the styles and sounds themselves are very diverse in nature

You can go from jazzy brass riffs, to smooth string beds, right into a rough and rugged electric keyboard riff.  Not just turntable hip hop, not just club pop, not just jazzy rnb, it’s a little bit of it all mixed into it’s own thing.

Fatloud definitely has their own sound, and so far, I’ve always been well pleased with that sound and surprised by the range of styles included that yet remain true to their sound.

What’s the bottom line, is Dust a must have?

I think it is, but again, that depends on your style and type of music you make.  If you’re looking for some of that classic boom bap style of dusty music, then there are definitely other products I’ve reviewed that will suit you.

If you like the sound and feel of a “lil bit of dirt” yet still want something that can be turned into both classic boom bap or new school space age funk then this is it.  The synths are fat, the drums are hard, the strings are silky, and the brass is huge.

You very well may be tempted to use the loops as is, for the foundation of your next track…and that’s totally your call, I prefer to chop but sometimes you just got to loop it and go…I understand that too.

This is no question, 5 out of 5 subs, I’ve YET to be let down by anything Fatloud puts out, it doesn’t get old, it doesn’t get boring, and the quality never slacks.

I’ll say the same thing I said before….MORE XL SERIES PRODUCTS PLEASE!

I really like how they lay it out, I’m just surprised no other sample pack providers are doing it this way, you usually only get it like this on some sample cd libraries.

Either way, I’m happy, it’s dope…and I think you should check out the demos. peep Fatloud Sample Shop

let me know what ya think!

I like the sounds you get. Definitely not old school but more contemporary ready for radio play if you use them right.

Its on my list for later.

btw, did you get a chance to check out the new sound libraries for Beat Thang. I gotta say they are stepping it up. Once I get the vst for that application I will probably start using it again and cop those new sounds.

Nice sounds, I just got their Black & Gold 2wks back, not to mention 5 other paks. Me likey! I’m just trying to exercise some discipline being I’m trying to save up for other objectives ;-)
Now don’t take this the wrong way but I’d like to hear some more “organic” sounds from them, you know like an alto sax in a tiled bath room or a mop bucket for a drum, run something through a tube compressor or tape emulation fx (eh, never mind I’m just being greedy).
For those in need of a fix don’t forget the Urban no-brainer 2 @ bandmateloops, jeez I it’s times like this that make me wish I had waited just a tad longer (like the price of the MV-8800 now!)
    -Peace

    [Reply]

    saintjoe Reply:

@Jamari, Hahaha I feel ya, but I don’t think they are the “organic” type, I think they are the pristine, radio ready type. There’s plenty of folks for that organic, sample magic and eQuipped come to mind lol.

I like them doing exactly what they do lol, but it’s all good I’m sure whatever they do it will be hot.

    thanks for peepin it

Yeah i just got it… i wished they could have had sampled the hole instrument, so producer’s have the option of playing something new.. beside of playing with riff’s from someone’s broke down beat’s

it kinda get’s old fast… to keep people buying more an more… there 4 they should just drop the price, if they are going to keep doing just the broke down beat thing..

if they don’t do it next time around im just going to buy a rack unit, and call it a day… so that way i won’t have to keep buying broke down beats… just for the sounds..

    [Reply]

    saintjoe Reply:

@01halo, you sound like you need to get kontakt bro! My kontakt library is HUGE filled with any and every instrument I want. Also, Kontakt player is free, and can play any kontakt library from NI or any “powered by kontakt” instrument.

You need to buy instruments instead of samples…I use both, but if you want to play your own stuff, then these are not the types of libraries you should be buying :)

Definitely look into kore player and kontakt player, good stuff, free, and easily expandable with instruments you can play.

    [Reply]

    01halo Reply:

@saintjoe, Yeah i have all that stuff.. in Logic and reasons..
but i use hardware like mpc5000,motif es,virus ti, mopho… and i buy the stuff
and put it in battery.. and the mpc….

    [Reply]

    saintjoe Reply:

@01halo, cool, just saying, you’re suggesting they need to change what they are doing, when clearly it’s not advertised as instruments but as loops/riffs.

Just saying that there’s plenty other companies out there offering instruments instead of loops and riffs, which would probably be more in line with what you want.

Prime Loops has some dope analog synth instruments on their site, I actually reviewed it on here. Analogue Synthesis

    Hi there,

Just want to say I love your reviews, for those of us on a budget it helps us to make sure we buy the quality samples rather than wasting money on the not so good ones.
I have a question I hope you can help.I use magix music maker 15 (as I am new to producing I was informed this was the cheapest and easiest to use) It is ok but eventually (when I can get more funds) I would like to get reason or cubase etc.My question is…I love the fatlound series and have a couple. But for some reason the samples over time disappear!!! fat loud were really helpful trying to help as they have had a few people with the same issue. The samples start off ok but with magix they start dissappearing over time with an error message.Any ideas what it could be?the file format of
    c users marco sement/document/magix
music modernsession wav acid constructionkit 5th 70bpmchoir cannot be read by magix music maker

please ensure that the affected drive is not full or write protected
if you do not have read or write access to this path please contact the administrator

    [Reply]

    saintjoe Reply:

@marcelo, I never heard of that, make sure you’re using 16 bit format just in case magix can’t read the 24 bit files correctly. I’ve never heard of samples disappearing! Can you see it actually on your drive or is it gone from the drive! Maybe magix is doing something weird.

    marco Reply:

@saintjoe, Hi my friend, they all work which is strange and then just stop working with that error coming up.
I am going to save up and get reason 4 I think, I also want to make 2 points.
1.Thanks for your fantastic reviews(and the reply) it real helps consumer choices and your you tube vids are really helpul too.
2.I would like to say Paul at fatlouds customer service is awesome. Not only did he try and resolve any issues with magix but as been in constant contact trying to help.Great company and sounds and great customer service.
P.s I hope to get half as good as you one day. :0)

    saintjoe Reply:

@marco, very weird man! I agree Paul’s customer service is DOPE! I’m glad you found the site man and glad you like the vids and info I put up, I appreciate the feedback!

    PS: be better than me!

    marco Reply:

@saintjoe, I am a big fan of the fatloud sound and prime loops but Nova and P5 sounds cool too.
I agree with you regarding construction kits, they are good that they give you a basis of a track but to be original its better to put them all in seperate folders and start from scratch and make something fresh and new.

Keep up the great work and look forward to some reviews soon.

P.s Music is my passion and I plan to be the best I can………..(but I will be happy being half as good bro!!!)
