Cinematique Instruments Gecko Kaleidoscope review

2

Hey what’s good fam!

Back with another review for you, this time it’s a new instrument in the Gecko family from Cinematique Instruments called Kaleidoscope.

Let’s check it out!

So what is Gecko Kaleidoscope?

gecko_kaleidoIt’s a Kontakt instrument dedicated to smooth, soft pads and deep/airy ambiences.

As with other Gecko instruments, you’re able to layer up to 6 sound sources to create your own pads and atmospheres.

You can also load up the presets and get to playing right away, along with the ability to tweak effects, eq, and reverb.

It’s definitely not for huge “epic” pads, the sound is geared more towards soft, evolving, deep ambient textures.

Quick Specs

How does it sound?

Reel to Reel Tape RecorderThere’s a very light, soft, chilled-out sound to this instrument.

I love how complex the sounds can be yet still keep an organic texture to it.

The interface encourages experimentation and mixing the various sound sources allows for quick creation of your own ambient content.

This isn’t something I’d go to for “in your face” pads and chords, but for the type of sounds that can fill in and mellow out a track, it’s definitely up to the task.

Being able to quickly add some basic effects like delay, eq, and reverb, or easily add “presence” to the sound allows for fast customization.

I also dig the quick use of modulation with the fly table, filter, and modulation options.

So what’s the bottom line?

Cinematique Instruments does things their own way, they have some really unique and useful products in their line-up, and they don’t focus on trying to be everything to everyone.

4subsI give Gecko Kaleidoscope 4 out of 5 subs, overall it has a smooth soft sound that anyone that’s a fan of deep airy pads will love. Plus the interface is very intuitive to use.

They have many other Gecko instruments for everything from rhythmic sounds to mallets and cheap keyboard instruments.

They even have a free version of Gecko for you to try out for yourself, I highly suggest picking that up as well.

I definitely enjoy what Cinematique brings to the table, even if everything isn’t my personal cup of tea, they have quite a few products that I find useful, inspiring, and just plain fun to use.

I find myself drawn to the Gecko series instruments, especially those geared towards pads, textures, and ambient type sounds.

  1. SJ: Thanks for giving us an inside look for this Kontakt library. I never heard of this instrument before your review. From your video, there’s some interesting sounds to work with. I’ll rate this @ 3.5/5.0. (There are so many ambient sounds and kits to date).
