Big Fish Hook City RnB Edition review

It’s Friday…yes it’s time for some Big Fish!!

Today I’m checking out a product from a new label they distribute called VIP Loops…

This one is interesting in that it includes vocal hooks withing the kits.

Not just random snips, but fully produced and broken out vocal hooks including ad libs and background vocals.

They seem to have a few different flavors, today I’m checking out the RnB version

So let’s checkout Hook City….RnB edition

What is Hook City RnB Edition?

It’s basically an rnb based construction loop set, but it includes the addition of modern vocal hooks.

Not just random words or phrases, it’s actual hooks…

some auto tuned, some vocoded, some just straight classic harmonized.

It seems to be a mixture of classic rnb ballads…

as well as urban infused techno pop type rnb tracks.

Synths, strings, keys, bass, guitars, drums, fx…all the stuff you’d expect from an rnb sample collection.

Quick Specs

  • content: 15 construction kits 1.5 gb download
  • format: apple, wav, acid
  • price: $49.95

How does it sound?

Like songs lol

Seriously, most of these kits, if you listen to the demo tracks, could be songs on their own.  That can be good or bad. It’s good because you know everything was produced to fit right.

That can also pose a problem, they sound so good together you almost don’t want to break them up….but you know me…I’ve got to do it!

The synths sound right, a lot of gated and smooth lead type synths in here.

Also some good guitar loops, and even a few piano loops.

The sound like good rnb loops in general, but the vocals add a different creativity to the collection.

The hooks are long, so you have a lot of stuff to chop up, and the phrases actually fit into a commercial rnb setting.

Enough to chop and make your own, with enough variation in recording style/technique to give you a good variety.

Overall the production is very good, well produced, and usable…I wish there were some oneshot drums, but I have no problem chopping up the drum loops.

So what’s the bottom line?

I like this idea, and I like this collection.

It takes sample loops to the next level and shows the creators know how to make songs and not just beats.

Many of us like to chop up small parts of vocals and such, but it’s usually not as easy to find vocals that fit in an rnb style track.

There’s enough variety to keep it useful, with quality loops and riffs to keep you chopping.

It’s an average size collection so it won’t break the bank either.

Wish there were some single hit drums, but that’s not a major issue really lol.

I give this collection 4 out of  subs…really good content both vocally and musically.

You can hear some background/headphone music in some of the vocals…which is a given when working on a song, but since these are used as samples you don’t really want to deal with that.

But it’s not too bad, and once you start putting the vocals into songs you can’t notice…but it could pose an issue when mixing vocals from one kit with music of your own or from another kit.

A small thing in the big picture, but worth mentioning if you’re like me and notice stuff like this

Go on over to Big Fish and check it out, let them know I sent ya! Big Fish Audio Hook City RnB Edition

Nice sounds, and what you hooked sounded dope. I always say it, but Big Fish is just ridiculously consistent with their overall quality.

I was on BigFish’s site recently and saw this sample pak. But I skipped over it, cuz I was just leary of the idea of layin someone elses vocals on a track.
But you blew my reluctance outta the water. Just thinking of all the crazy stuff I could do with these hooks. Plus, it’s a real time saver if you just wanted ppl to hear what your beat will sound like with vocals.
Thanks again Fam! Your a Saint! Lol

I can see some possibilities with these construction kits.
I’m glad they started focusing on hooks and vocals more. This definitely will help me out because I can’t sing a lick.
I liked that chop you did…keep showing off those skillz on Maschine brotha.

@Madbull1971, I agree man, it’s fun to mess with and good for those of us that don’t have vocalists on hand or studio time to record them…adds another dimension/instrument to the productions. Thanks for the support as always man!

  10. O'Boy says:

    You killed that beat man!!!

    dope review as always

  11. Gary Bichell says:

What up saint? Def feeling the beat loved how quick you chopped it up and threw it together. Im more into composing myself but i suck on the keys lol. So i was thinking about doing the same getting some loops and chopping them up but my thing is since a company like big fish is so big that a lot of peoople would be using the same samples. Cuz im looking to sell my beats on soundclick and dont want peeps like ah man 3 other dudes done used this same sample.

    • saintjoe says:

@Gary Bichell, yeah I hear ya man, but that’s like saying you don’t want to get a keyboard, synth, plugin, etc…because others will have it. It’s all about what you do wit it homie :)
