Bad Cat Media Music Box library review

15

Yo what’s good fam, back with another review for ya.

Today I’m showing off a new music box library from a new sample library company.

The company is Bad Cat Media, they’re mainly focused on actually creating music for media/film and such but are also getting into the sample library space.

I personally love the music box instrument in general so I’m always looking for cool music box libraries.

Let’s check it out

So what is The Music Box?

The concept behind this library was to capture a really creepy sounding, authentic music box great for use in sound design and media music production.

It’s really a straight forward idea.

Provide a really high quality music box that’s expressive and captures all the quirkiness of instruments it was sampled from.

Oh yeah…they sampled 16 different music box instruments.

Quick Specs

  • content: 420mb
  • format: Kontakt and EXS24
  • price: $19.99

How does it sound?

I really dig the sound here, not only does it capture that rich, tine-like sound of the music box, but they also captured the extra sounds that go along with it.

I’m talking about the scrapes, cranks, and gears you hear whenย twisting, winding, and playing a music box.

I think that’s what gives this library it’s unique sound, it’s very “clunky” in my opinion, and that gives it a cool character.

The recorded samples themselves are really well done and you can tell they pay attention to details, even theย various “extra fx” are well recorded. So if you just want to use a scrape or crank from a music box…you’re more than welcome to.

What’s the bottom line?

This is a really cool library, if you’re looking for this specific type of sound.

I does one thing but does it pretty well, and sounds good doing it.

I give The Music Box 3.5 out of 5 subs. It’s a really unique take on a music box that has a very usable character.

Of course I would love to see a more intricate interface, something that lets us get in and tweak the raw sounds with fx, filters, and other options directly from the front panel.

However, at $20, it’s still a great deal for anyone who is looking for a quality music box with a unique character and sound.

If you like music boxes like me…this one is a good one to add to your collection

  1. I like this, sounds kinda like a kalimba, but more bell-like. Could definitely use this. I like the gear sounds too.

btw, whenever I watch the demo’s on full screen I always forget I’m watching a video and have a habit of trying to adjust parameters of the instruments on your screen, like its my program on my computer. LOL.
